What Is a Sleep Study (Polysomnography) and How Is It Performed?
A sleep study (polysomnography) is a comprehensive medical examination used to assess the quality and pattern of sleep. During this test, many physiological parameters of the body are recorded and analyzed simultaneously while the patient is asleep. It plays a critical role in diagnosing and planning treatment for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy.
The sleep study is typically conducted over the course of one night. To ensure the most natural sleep conditions, the test can be performed in a sleep laboratory (clinic), at home, or in hotel-style centers. This flexibility allows the individual to feel more comfortable and enables the collection of more natural sleep data.
Before the test begins, an experienced sleep technician prepares the patient. Electrodes and sensors are placed on the head, face, chest, abdomen, and legs to monitor brain waves (EEG), eye movements (EOG), jaw muscle activity (EMG), heart rhythm (ECG), respiratory movements, oxygen levels, snoring, and sleep position in real time. These devices are non-invasive—meaning they do not involve needles, are painless, and do not harm the patient.
Once the patient falls asleep, all these signals are recorded by a special software on a computer. The patient is also monitored remotely by the technician throughout the night, and interventions are made if necessary. The data collected is then reviewed in detail by a sleep specialist. Sleep stages, breathing pauses (apneas), oxygen drops, sleep fragmentation, and other abnormalities are analyzed to prepare a personalized report.
Based on the results, treatments such as positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy may be recommended. This test not only ensures accurate diagnosis but also helps determine individualized treatment options.
